William Hill (16 July 1903 – 15 October 1971) was a prominent British businessman and the founder of William Hill plc, one of the United Kingdom's largest bookmakers. Born in Birmingham, he began his bookmaking career in the 1920s, initially taking bets illegally on the streets and later from a motorcycle. He moved to London in 1929 and started a legal betting business in 1934, capitalizing on a loophole that allowed for credit and postal betting, but not cash. Hill was known for his entrepreneurial spirit, integrity, and innovative approach to the betting industry, introducing fixed-odds football betting and being among the first to use betting slips. Despite his own reported dislike for gambling on horses, he built a formidable empire that became a household name in betting and gaming. He retired from the business in 1970 and passed away in Newmarket the following year.
William Hill's work history includes a series of influential roles in various companies. Here is a detailed list of his professional journey:
Established one of the UK's leading bookmaking companies in 1934, which grew from a small postal/credit betting service into a globally recognized brand in the betting and gaming industry.
Introduced innovations such as fixed-odds football betting and the use of detailed betting slips, which helped to legitimize and standardize betting operations in the UK.
Beyond his bookmaking empire, William Hill was a successful racehorse owner and breeder, with his horses winning several classic races, including the Derby with Nimbus in 1949 and the St. Leger Stakes with Cantelo in 1959.
Transformed a niche, often clandestine, activity into a major business enterprise, demonstrating significant entrepreneurial skill and business acumen in navigating the complex legal and social aspects of gambling during his era.
