Alan Mathison Turing OBE FRS (23 June 1912 – 7 June 1954) was a highly influential English mathematician, computer scientist, logician, cryptanalyst, philosopher, and theoretical biologist. He is widely considered the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence. Turing's work during World War II at Bletchley Park was crucial in cracking German ciphers, particularly the Enigma code, which is estimated to have shortened the war by several years and saved millions of lives. He formalized the concepts of 'algorithm' and 'computation' with the Turing machine, a model of a general-purpose computer. After the war, he worked on the design of the Automatic Computing Engine (ACE), one of the earliest designs for a stored-program computer. His later work delved into mathematical biology, proposing a theory of morphogenesis. Despite his monumental contributions, Turing was prosecuted in 1952 for homosexual acts, then illegal in the UK. He accepted chemical castration as an alternative to prison. Turing died in 1954 from cyanide poisoning; an inquest determined his death as a suicide, though this has been debated. He received a posthumous Royal Pardon in 2013.
Turning Turing's work history includes a series of influential roles in various companies. Here is a detailed list of his professional journey:
Introduced in his 1936 paper 'On Computable Numbers, with an Application to the Entscheidungsproblem,' the Turing machine is a foundational abstract model of computation. It formalized the concept of an algorithm and defined the limits of what can be computed, laying the theoretical groundwork for modern computers.
Led Hut 8 and developed techniques, including improvements to the Polish 'bombe' machine, to decipher encrypted German messages from the Enigma machine during World War II. This intelligence was vital for Allied victory.
After WWII, Turing designed the ACE at the National Physical Laboratory. It was one of the first detailed designs for a stored-program computer, influencing subsequent computer architectures globally.
Proposed in his 1950 paper 'Computing Machinery and Intelligence,' the Turing Test is a criterion for determining whether a machine can exhibit intelligent behavior indistinguishable from that of a human. It remains a significant concept in the philosophy of artificial intelligence.
In his later years, Turing published 'The Chemical Basis of Morphogenesis' (1952), outlining his theories on how patterns (like stripes and spots) in biological systems could arise from the interaction of chemical substances (reaction-diffusion systems). This work is considered seminal in mathematical biology.
In 2013, Alan Turing received a posthumous Royal Pardon from Queen Elizabeth II for his 1952 conviction for 'gross indecency,' formally acknowledging the injustice he faced.
