Thomas Edmondson (20 June 1792 – 22 June 1851) was an English inventor and member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). He is renowned for inventing the Edmondson railway ticket system. Born in Lancaster, Lancashire, he initially worked as a cabinet maker. Later, while employed as a station master at Milton (later Brampton) on the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway, he conceived of a more efficient and secure method for issuing railway tickets. His system involved pre-printed, card-stock tickets, sequentially numbered, and dated using a special press. This innovation dramatically improved railway ticketing efficiency, reduced fraud, and became the standard for railways worldwide for over a century. He later moved to Manchester to establish a business manufacturing these tickets and the associated machinery.
