Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee, OBE, was a pioneering figure in Indian military history, renowned as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief (later termed Chief of the Air Staff) of the Indian Air Force. Born on March 5, 1911, in Calcutta (now Kolkata), he was educated at Presidency College, Kolkata, the University of Cambridge, and later became one of the first Indians to be commissioned into the Royal Air Force, graduating from RAF Cranwell in 1932. Mukerjee had a distinguished career, serving in various capacities and playing a crucial role in the formation and development of the Indian Air Force post-independence. He was instrumental in its expansion, modernization, and in establishing its operational doctrines. His leadership during a critical period of nation-building and his vision for air power in India earned him the informal title 'Father of the Indian Air Force'. His promising career was tragically cut short when he died in Tokyo, Japan, on November 8, 1960, due to choking on a piece of food while having a meal with a friend.

First Indian Chief of the Air Staff
Appointed as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief (later designated Chief of the Air Staff) of the Indian Air Force on April 1, 1954, succeeding Air Marshal Gerald Gibbs. This marked a significant milestone in the Indianisation of the armed forces.
Pioneer in Indian Aviation
One of the first Indians to be commissioned into the Royal Air Force (1932). He was the first Indian to command a Flight (1938), a Squadron (No. 1 RIAF Squadron, 1939), and an RAF Station (Kohat, 1943).
Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE)
Awarded the OBE in the 1945 New Year Honours for his distinguished services during World War II, particularly his leadership on the North-West Frontier.
