Who Is Robert Browning?

Robert Browning (7 May 1812 – 12 December 1889) was an English poet and playwright whose mastery of the dramatic monologue made him one of the foremost Victorian poets. His poems are known for their irony, characterization, dark humour, social commentary, historical settings, and challenging vocabulary and syntax. Browning's early career began promisingly but was not a critical success. The long poem 'Pauline' brought him to the attention of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and was followed by 'Paracelsus,' which was praised by William Wordsworth and Charles Dickens. His reputation grew from the mid-1850s with works like 'Men and Women' (1855). His magnum opus, 'The Ring and the Book' (1868–1869), a long blank-verse poem based on a complex, 17th-century Italian murder trial, cemented his status as a leading poet. He was married to the equally renowned poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and much of his life was spent in Italy until her death, after which he returned to London, though he died in Venice.
