Richard I (8 September 1157 – 6 April 1199) was King of England from 1189 until his death in 1199. He was known as Richard Cœur de Lion, or Richard the Lionheart, because of his reputation as a great military leader and warrior. He was the third of five sons of King Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Richard spent little of his reign in England (estimated at around six months), with most of his time dedicated to the Third Crusade, defending his French territories, or in captivity. He commanded Christian armies during the Third Crusade, leading the campaign after the departure of Philip II of France and achieving considerable victories against his Muslim counterpart, Saladin, although he did not reconquer Jerusalem. His reign was marked by significant taxation to fund his military expeditions and ransom. He remains an iconic figure in English folklore and history, often romanticized for his chivalry and martial prowess.
Richard I.'s work history includes a series of influential roles in various companies. Here is a detailed list of his professional journey:
Led significant Christian forces during the Third Crusade (1189–1192), achieving several military victories against Saladin's armies, including the capture of Acre (1191) and the Battle of Arsuf (1191).
Cultivated a formidable reputation as a courageous and skilled military commander throughout Europe and the Levant, earning the epithet 'Lionheart' (Cœur de Lion) for his bravery in battle.
Successfully negotiated the Treaty of Jaffa with Saladin in 1192, which, while not ceding Jerusalem, secured Christian control over a substantial coastal strip from Tyre to Jaffa and guaranteed unarmed Christian pilgrims access to holy sites in Jerusalem.
Prior to and during his kingship, Richard effectively governed and defended vast territories in France, including Aquitaine (from 1172) and Normandy, demonstrating significant administrative and military leadership abilities.
