Alan L. Hart (born Alberta Lucille Hart; October 4, 1890 – July 1, 1962) was an American physician, radiologist, tuberculosis researcher, writer, and novelist. He was a trailblazer in the use of X-ray photography for tuberculosis detection and played a crucial role in early 20th-century public health campaigns to combat the disease. Hart was also one of the first documented transgender men in the United States to undergo a hysterectomy and live the remainder of his life as a man. His medical career, primarily focused on tuberculosis research and treatment, spanned several decades and took him through various sanatoriums and public health roles across states like Oregon, Idaho, New Mexico, and finally Connecticut, where he served as Director of Hospitalization and Rehabilitation for the Connecticut State Tuberculosis Commission until his death.
Alan Hart's work history includes a series of influential roles in various companies. Here is a detailed list of his professional journey:
Dr. Hart was instrumental in demonstrating the effectiveness of X-ray photography for mass screening to detect asymptomatic tuberculosis, significantly improving early diagnosis and public health control measures.
In 1917-1918, Hart underwent a hysterectomy and began living full-time as a man, becoming one of the earliest documented individuals in the U.S. to undergo medical transition (FTM). His life paved the way for greater understanding and acceptance of transgender identities.
He dedicated much of his career to public health, managing sanatoriums and developing comprehensive programs to combat tuberculosis. His work in Connecticut significantly contributed to the state's efforts against TB.

Earned a Master of Public Health degree from Yale University in 1948, further solidifying his expertise and commitment to public health administration.
