CountryUnited States

Michael J. Novosel Sr. (January 9, 1922 – April 2, 2006) was a United States Army warrant officer and aviator who received the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during the Vietnam War. He served in World War II as a B-29 Superfortress pilot, the Korean War (though not in a flying capacity), and the Vietnam War as a MEDEVAC helicopter pilot. During his two tours in Vietnam, he flew an unarmed Bell UH-1 'Huey' helicopter. On October 2, 1969, during a hazardous medical evacuation mission in Kien Tuong Province, Republic of Vietnam, Novosel, despite his aircraft being heavily damaged and himself wounded, flew 15 extremely dangerous extractions under intense enemy fire, rescuing 29 soldiers. Over his career in Vietnam, he flew 2,543 missions and evacuated over 5,500 wounded personnel. Uniquely, he served in the same unit as his son, Michael J. Novosel Jr., also a helicopter pilot. He retired from the Army in 1985 as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 after 42 years of military service across three wars. He passed away in 2006 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
