Luis García Meza Tejada was a Bolivian military general who served as the de facto President of Bolivia from July 17, 1980, to August 4, 1981. He seized power through a violent military coup d'état, infamously known as the 'Cocaine Coup' due to its alleged strong ties with prominent drug traffickers, notably Roberto Suárez Gómez. His short but brutal regime was characterized by extreme authoritarianism, widespread human rights abuses including torture, disappearances, and extrajudicial killings, and the severe suppression of political dissent, labor unions, and the media. His government faced significant international condemnation and internal resistance, leading to his ousting by a subsequent military coup after just over a year in power. García Meza fled Bolivia but was eventually extradited from Brazil in 1995. He was tried and convicted by the Bolivian Supreme Court for genocide, sedition, armed uprising, treason, and other crimes committed during his rule, receiving a 30-year prison sentence without the right to parole. He served his sentence in the Chonchocoro maximum-security prison and died in a military hospital in La Paz in April 2018.
