Laurence Paul Cunningham (8 March 1956 – 15 July 1989) was an English professional footballer. A fast, skillful, and elegant winger, he was known for his flair and exciting style of play. Cunningham began his career at Leyton Orient in 1974 before moving to West Bromwich Albion in 1977. At West Brom, he formed part of the iconic 'Three Degrees' alongside Cyrille Regis and Brendon Batson, a trio of black players who were instrumental in challenging racial prejudice in English football. In 1979, he made a groundbreaking transfer to Real Madrid, becoming the first British player to sign for the Spanish club. His time at Real Madrid was initially successful, including winning a La Liga title and two Copa del Rey trophies, but was later hampered by injuries. He also had spells with Manchester United, Marseille, Leicester City, Rayo Vallecano, Charleroi, and Wimbledon, notably winning the FA Cup with Wimbledon in 1988. Cunningham was also the first black footballer to represent England at any competitive level, playing for the England U21s in 1977, and later earned 6 caps for the senior team.
