John Patrick O'Neill (February 6, 1952 – September 11, 2001) was an American counter-terrorism expert who worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) from 1976 to 2001. He rose to become the FBI's leading expert on Osama bin Laden and Al-Qaeda during the 1990s, playing a significant role in investigations such as the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, the 1996 Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia, and the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in Africa. O'Neill was known for his intense dedication and prescient warnings about the threat posed by Al-Qaeda, though he often expressed frustration with bureaucratic obstacles within the U.S. government that he felt hampered counter-terrorism efforts. After retiring from the FBI in August 2001, he became the head of security at the World Trade Center. Tragically, he died in the September 11, 2001 attacks at the World Trade Center, just weeks after starting his new role.
