CountryUnited States

Dr. John Scudder (1793-1855) was a pioneering American medical missionary, widely recognized as the first of his kind from the United States to serve in India. Born in Freehold, New Jersey, he initially practiced medicine in New York City before dedicating his life to missionary work after reading a tract titled 'The Conversion of the World, or the Claims of Six Hundred Millions.' In 1819, accompanied by his wife Harriet Waterbury Scudder, he sailed to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and later moved to Madras (now Chennai), India, in 1836. In Madras, he established one of the first Western-style hospitals in the region, providing crucial medical care, particularly during cholera epidemics, and was also renowned for his work in ophthalmic surgery. Dr. Scudder was not only a physician and surgeon but also an ordained minister who actively evangelized. He and his wife raised a large family, many of whom (seven sons and two daughters who survived to adulthood) followed in his footsteps, creating a remarkable multi-generational legacy of missionary service in India that spanned over a century, known as the 'Scudder Missionary Dynasty.' He passed away in Wynberg, South Africa, while on a visit for his health.
