Jeremy Taylor (1613–1667) was a distinguished Anglican cleric, theologian, and prolific writer during the 17th century in England and Ireland. He is often referred to as the "Shakespeare of Divines" for his poetic style and profound spiritual insights. Educated at Cambridge, he became a fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, and a chaplain to Archbishop William Laud and King Charles I. During the English Civil War and the Interregnum, Taylor faced persecution and imprisonment due to his Royalist and Anglican loyalties. He spent a significant period in Wales, where he wrote some of his most famous devotional works. After the Restoration, he was made Bishop of Down and Connor in Ireland, and later also Bishop of Dromore. His writings, including "Holy Living" (1650), "Holy Dying" (1651), and "Ductor Dubitantium" (1660), are celebrated for their piety, eloquence, and pastoral wisdom, and they remain influential in Anglican spirituality.
