Sir Jeffrey Philip Tate CBE (28 April 1943 – 2 June 2017) was a highly acclaimed British conductor, celebrated for his profound musical interpretations and remarkable resilience. Born with spina bifida and also suffering from kyphosis, he initially studied medicine at Christ's College, Cambridge, qualifying as a doctor before fully committing to a career in music. He began his musical journey at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, under Sir Georg Solti, and went on to hold significant posts including Principal Conductor of the English Chamber Orchestra, Principal Conductor of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (1986-1993), Principal Conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra (1991-1995), Music Director of the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples (2005-2010), and Chief Conductor of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra from 2009 until his death. Tate was particularly renowned for his interpretations of Mozart, Wagner, and Richard Strauss. His ability to lead orchestras worldwide with great passion and insight, despite his significant physical challenges, served as an inspiration to many. He passed away in Bergamo, Italy, shortly after being knighted in the 2017 New Year Honours.
