James Edwin Webb's Overview

James Edwin Webb (October 7, 1906 – March 27, 1992) was an American government official who served as the second Administrator of NASA from February 14, 1961, to October 7, 1968. Webb oversaw NASA from the beginning of the Kennedy administration through the end of the Johnson administration, thus overseeing all the critical first manned missions throughout the Mercury and Gemini programs, and then through the early years of the Apollo program, until just before the first crewed Apollo mission. He was instrumental in securing political support and resources for the Apollo program. Webb's leadership was characterized by a strong emphasis on not only human spaceflight but also on a robust program of space science, aeronautics, and technological development, believing these elements were crucial for long-term success and public benefit. He famously managed the agency during the Apollo 1 fire tragedy, taking responsibility and leading the subsequent investigation and recovery efforts. The James Webb Space Telescope, NASA's flagship successor to the Hubble Space Telescope, was named in his honor.
