Gilbert Ray 'Gil' Hodges (April 4, 1924 – April 2, 1972) was an American professional baseball first baseman and manager who played 18 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB), primarily for the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers. He was a key member of the 'Boys of Summer' Dodgers teams of the 1950s, known for his powerful hitting, exceptional fielding, and quiet leadership. An eight-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove Award winner, Hodges also served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, earning a Bronze Star for heroism. After his playing career, he managed the Washington Senators and later the New York Mets, famously leading the 'Miracle Mets' to the 1969 World Series championship. Hodges was widely respected throughout baseball for his integrity, character, and sportsmanship. He died suddenly of a heart attack just two days before his 48th birthday. He was posthumously elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2022. Although deceased, Brooklyn remains the city most iconically associated with his playing career and family life.
