Gary George Wetzel is a highly decorated United States Army veteran renowned for his extraordinary heroism during the Vietnam War, for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Born on September 29, 1947, in South Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Wetzel served as a Specialist Four in the 173rd Assault Helicopter Company, 173rd Airborne Brigade. On January 8, 1968, near Ap Dong An, Republic of Vietnam, his helicopter was shot down and came under intense enemy fire. Despite being critically wounded – with his right arm nearly severed, and additional injuries to his left arm, chest, and left leg – Wetzel tenaciously manned his machine gun, providing suppressive fire that protected his crew chief who was rescuing the pilot and co-pilot from the burning aircraft. His selfless courage and unwavering determination in the face of grave danger were directly responsible for saving the lives of his fellow crewmen. After his military service, he has been an inspirational figure, often participating in veteran events and sharing his story.
