Ernest Edison West (September 2, 1931 – May 1, 2021) was a United States Army soldier and a recipient of the Medal of Honor, the U.S. military's highest decoration, for his heroic actions in the Korean War. Born in Russell, Kentucky, and orphaned at a young age, he was raised in an orphanage. West was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1950. On October 12, 1952, during an assault near Sataeri, Korea, Private First Class West, accompanying a patrol, displayed extraordinary valor. When his unit was ambushed, he ran through intense fire to rescue his wounded leader. Despite being wounded himself (losing an eye), he armed himself, shielded his leader, and eliminated several enemy soldiers. He repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire to evacuate other wounded comrades, ensuring their safety before allowing his own wounds to be treated. After his military service, he returned to Wurtland, Kentucky, and worked for Ashland Oil (later Marathon Ashland Petroleum) for over 37 years. He remained a humble figure, deeply involved in his community and veterans' affairs until his passing.
