Dirk Martens (circa 1446/1447 – 28 May 1534) was a pivotal figure in the history of printing in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). As a printer and publisher, he was active from approximately 1473 until his death. Martens is renowned for introducing and popularizing printing in the region, establishing presses in Aalst and later, more significantly, in Leuven. He played a crucial role in the dissemination of humanist thought by publishing important works, including those by Erasmus and the first edition of Thomas More's 'Utopia.' His efforts significantly contributed to the cultural and intellectual landscape of the Renaissance in the Low Countries, making him one of the most important typographers of his time.
