William Blaine Richardson III (November 15, 1947 – September 1, 2023) was an influential American politician, diplomat, author, and statesman. He served as the 30th Governor of New Mexico from 2003 to 2011. Prior to his governorship, Richardson had a distinguished career in federal service, including as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations (1997–1998) and as the U.S. Secretary of Energy (1998–2001) under President Bill Clinton. He also served 14 years as a U.S. Congressman representing New Mexico's 3rd congressional district. Richardson was renowned for his extensive diplomatic work, particularly in negotiating the release of American hostages and political prisoners from hostile nations such as North Korea, Iraq, Cuba, and Sudan. After leaving public office, he founded the Richardson Center for Global Engagement to promote international peace and dialogue. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize multiple times for his humanitarian and diplomatic efforts.
Bill Richardson's work history includes a series of influential roles in various companies. Here is a detailed list of his professional journey:
Served two terms (2003-2011), focusing on improving education, healthcare, creating jobs, and promoting renewable energy. He signed landmark legislation, including abolishing the death penalty in New Mexico and investing in infrastructure like the New Mexico Rail Runner Express.
As Secretary (1998-2001), he oversaw the U.S. Department of Energy, managed national laboratories, advanced energy research, addressed nuclear security challenges, and promoted energy efficiency and renewable energy sources.
Represented the United States at the UN (1997-1998), where he engaged in complex diplomatic negotiations on international peace, security, and human rights issues.
Gained international recognition for his informal, high-stakes diplomacy, successfully negotiating the release of numerous hostages, political prisoners, and American servicemen from countries like North Korea, Iraq, Cuba, Myanmar, and Sudan, often through his independent efforts and later via the Richardson Center.
Received multiple nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his extensive and often successful work in international diplomacy and securing the release of political prisoners and hostages worldwide.
Established this non-profit organization to continue his work on global diplomacy, conflict resolution, and prisoner release negotiations after leaving public office.
