Ahmed Maher Pasha (1888 – 24 February 1945) was an influential Egyptian political figure who served as the Prime Minister of Egypt from 10 October 1944 to 24 February 1945. He was educated in law in Egypt and France. Early in his career, he was associated with the Wafd Party and was involved in the Egyptian Revolution of 1919. He held several key ministerial posts, including Minister of Education (1924-1925), Minister of Finance (1936), and Minister of Commerce and Industry. Later, he became a leader of the Saadist Institutional Party, a splinter group from the Wafd. Maher Pasha's political stance was generally considered pro-British. His premiership occurred during a critical phase of World War II. He was assassinated in parliament shortly after announcing Egypt's declaration of war on Germany and Japan, a move intended to secure Egypt a place in the post-war international order, specifically the United Nations.
Ahmed Maher Pasha's work history includes a series of influential roles in various companies. Here is a detailed list of his professional journey:
Served as Prime Minister of Egypt from October 1944 to January 1945, and was reappointed, serving from January 1945 until his assassination in February 1945. He led the country during the latter stages of World War II.
Held several significant cabinet positions throughout his career, including Minister of Education, Minister of Finance, and Minister of Commerce and Industry, shaping national policies in these domains.
Co-founded and led the Saadist Institutional Party (Hizb al-Sa'diyyin), a significant political entity in Egypt that emerged from a split with the Wafd Party.
As Prime Minister, he made the critical decision for Egypt to declare war on Germany and Japan in February 1945, aiming to position Egypt favorably in the post-World War II international community. This act, however, directly led to his assassination by nationalist elements.
Served as the Speaker of the Egyptian Chamber of Deputies (the lower house of Parliament) on multiple occasions, demonstrating his influence and respect within the legislative body.
