Western Power Distribution (WPD) was the electricity distribution network operator for the Midlands, South West England, and South Wales. It was responsible for delivering electricity to approximately 7.9 million customers over a 55,500 square kilometres service area. WPD focused on operating and maintaining the network of towers, transformers, cables, and substations. In June 2021, WPD was acquired by National Grid plc, and in September 2022, its operations were rebranded as National Grid Electricity Distribution. The company was known for its high levels of network reliability and customer service.
Served as the primary administrative, strategic, and operational control center for Western Power Distribution's electricity network operations across its licensed regions.
A modern administrative building designed to support large-scale utility operations, including network control rooms, engineering planning, and customer service management. Equipped with robust infrastructure for managing a critical electricity network.
Historically, WPD fostered a culture focused on engineering excellence, operational reliability, stringent safety standards, and dedicated customer service. There was a strong emphasis on technical skills, employee development, and community engagement within its service areas. Post-acquisition, this culture is being integrated with National Grid's broader values.
The headquarters was pivotal for managing the electricity supply to millions, coordinating vast infrastructure projects, ensuring network resilience, and responding to emergencies across a significant portion of the UK.
Western Power Distribution's operations were entirely focused on electricity distribution within its licensed areas in the United Kingdom (Midlands, South West England, and South Wales). As an entity, WPD did not have a direct global operational presence. Its former parent company, PPL Corporation, is an international energy company, and its current owner, National Grid plc, has significant operations in the UK and the US.
