The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), also known as Kings Point, is one of the five United States service academies. It is charged with training officers for the United States Merchant Marine, branches of the military, and the transportation industry. Midshipmen (students) earn a Bachelor of Science degree, a U.S. Coast Guard license, and an officer's commission in the U.S. Armed Forces. The Academy's mission is to educate and graduate leaders of exemplary character who are inspired to serve the national security, marine transportation, and economic needs of the United States as licensed Merchant Marine Officers and commissioned officers in the Armed Forces. Its rigorous four-year program includes academics, regimental life, and practical sea-year training aboard commercial vessels.
The Kings Point campus serves as the primary location for all academic, training, residential, and administrative functions of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
The picturesque 82-acre waterfront campus includes historic Wiley Hall (formerly Walter P. Chrysler's mansion), state-of-the-art training facilities, simulators, a waterfront area with training vessels, and the American Merchant Marine Museum.
The environment at USMMA is a blend of a rigorous academic institution and a disciplined military-style regiment. For faculty and staff, it's a mission-driven environment focused on developing future leaders. For midshipmen, it involves a demanding schedule emphasizing discipline, leadership, and maritime proficiency.
The Kings Point campus is the sole federal academy dedicated to training U.S. Merchant Marine officers, playing a crucial role in national security, international trade, and economic vitality.
The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy's global presence is primarily manifested through its 'Sea Year' training program, where midshipmen serve on U.S. flag merchant vessels sailing to ports around the world. Graduates also serve globally as licensed officers in the U.S. Merchant Marine and as commissioned officers in all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, supporting international trade, national security, and humanitarian missions worldwide.
