The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is a cabinet department of the U.S. federal government with the primary mission of securing the nation from the many threats it faces. This includes counterterrorism, border security, immigration enforcement, cybersecurity, disaster preparedness and response, and protection of national leaders. Established in response to the September 11 attacks, DHS consolidates 22 federal agencies, including FEMA, TSA, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the U.S. Secret Service. It works to prevent terrorism, secure and manage U.S. borders, enforce and administer immigration laws, safeguard and secure cyberspace, and ensure resilience to disasters.
Serves as the central command and consolidated headquarters for the Department's leadership and various component agencies, facilitating inter-agency coordination, policy development, and operational oversight for national security.
The St. Elizabeths Campus is a historic site, formerly a psychiatric hospital, undergoing extensive renovation to become a state-of-the-art, secure campus. It features a mix of restored historic buildings and new, environmentally sustainable constructions, designed to consolidate DHS operations from dozens of locations across the National Capital Region.
As a major federal agency, the work culture at DHS headquarters is mission-driven, emphasizing national security, public service, and inter-agency collaboration. Employees often work in a structured environment focused on policy, operations, and support functions critical to the department's diverse missions. There's a strong sense of purpose and dedication among the workforce.
The St. Elizabeths Campus is significant as it represents one of the largest federal construction projects, aiming to unify DHS leadership and improve operational efficiency, communication, and collaboration across its numerous components, thereby strengthening national security.
While primarily focused on domestic security, DHS has a significant global presence to protect U.S. interests and borders. This includes stationing personnel from components like CBP, ICE, and the Coast Guard in numerous countries to work with international partners on issues such as counterterrorism, customs enforcement, immigration, transportation security, and law enforcement cooperation. DHS also engages in capacity building, information sharing, and joint operations with foreign governments and international organizations to address transnational threats.
