The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is the international environmental treaty adopted on 9 May 1992 in New York, and opened for signature at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro from 3 to 14 June 1992. It then entered into force on 21 March 1994, after a sufficient number of countries had ratified it. The UNFCCC is the parent treaty of the 2015 Paris Agreement. It is a framework convention, meaning that it sets out overall goals and principles for international climate action, but leaves the details to be negotiated and agreed upon by the Parties (countries) at Conferences of the Parties (COPs).
