UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, is an innovative partnership that leads and inspires the world to achieve its shared vision of zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination, and zero AIDS-related deaths. UNAIDS unites the efforts of 11 UN organizations—UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP, UNDP, UNFPA, UNODC, UN Women, ILO, UNESCO, WHO, and the World Bank—and works closely with global and national partners towards ending the AIDS epidemic as a public health threat by 2030 as part of the Sustainable Development Goals. It became operational in January 1996.
Serves as the central coordinating body for the global AIDS response, developing policy, providing strategic direction, mobilizing resources, and advocating for action on HIV/AIDS.
Located within Geneva's international district, facilitating close collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other global health partners. Modern office facilities designed to support a global workforce.
A multicultural, collaborative, and mission-driven environment, focused on public health, human rights, and achieving global targets. Staff are typically passionate about global health equity and social justice.
The nerve center for UNAIDS' global operations, crucial for strategy development, coordination with UN co-sponsors and partners, and global advocacy efforts to combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
UNAIDS supports a coordinated global response to HIV/AIDS through its headquarters in Geneva, six regional support teams (Asia and the Pacific; Eastern Europe and Central Asia; Eastern and Southern Africa; West and Central Africa; Latin America and the Caribbean; Middle East and North Africa), and offices in over 70 countries. Its functions globally include strategic guidance, policy development, technical support to national AIDS programs, advocacy for human rights and gender equality, resource mobilization, monitoring epidemic trends, and fostering partnerships to end AIDS as a public health threat.
