Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology is one of the largest tertiary education providers in the Bay of Plenty and South Waikato regions of New Zealand. It was established in 2016 through the merger of Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and Waiariki Institute of Technology. As of 2020, Toi Ohomai became a part of Te PÅ«kenga â New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology, a national network of vocational education providers. Toi Ohomai offers a wide range of courses from certificate to postgraduate level, focusing on practical skills and vocational training across various industries including trades, health, business, creative arts, and primary industries. It is committed to providing quality education that meets the needs of students, employers, and the wider community, with a strong emphasis on biculturalism and student success.
Serves as a primary campus for Toi Ohomai, offering a wide range of academic programs, student services, and administrative functions for the Rotorua region.
The Mokoia Campus features specialized training facilities including automotive workshops, construction and trades workshops, a hair and beauty salon, a training restaurant and café (Miko Cafe & Restaurant), a health and nursing simulation centre, and extensive library and student support services. It also has significant MÄori cultural spaces, including a Marae (Tangatarua Marae).
The work culture at Toi Ohomai emphasizes collaboration, student-centricity, innovation in education, and a strong commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles. Staff are dedicated to supporting student learning and success in a bicultural environment.
The Mokoia Campus is significant as a major centre for vocational education and training in the Rotorua and wider Bay of Plenty region. It plays a crucial role in upskilling the local workforce and supporting regional economic development. Its bicultural approach and facilities are central to its identity.
As a New Zealand-based tertiary education provider, Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology's primary presence is within New Zealand. Globally, its functions include international student recruitment, fostering partnerships with overseas educational institutions for student and staff exchange programs, and curriculum articulation. Through Te Pūkenga, it participates in a national network that may have broader international engagement strategies. It supports international students studying at its New Zealand campuses by providing comprehensive pastoral care and academic support.
