The Petroleum Institute (PI) was a premier engineering and research institution located in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, renowned for its specialized programs in petroleum engineering, petroleum geosciences, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. Established in 2001, PI was dedicated to producing world-class engineers and advancing research to support the UAE's oil and gas industry. In 2017, The Petroleum Institute merged with Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research (KUSTAR) and Masdar Institute of Science and Technology to form the comprehensive Khalifa University. The legacy and specialized programs of PI continue within Khalifa University, particularly at its Sas Al Nakhl campus (the former PI campus) and through its College of Engineering and Physical Sciences and dedicated research centers like the Petroleum Institute Research Center (PIRC) now known as the Research and Innovation Center on CO2 and Hydrogen (RICH).
The campus historically served as the central hub for The Petroleum Institute's undergraduate and graduate engineering programs, advanced research activities, and administrative operations, with a primary focus on the oil and gas industry. It now functions as a key campus for Khalifa University, continuing its focus on engineering, energy studies, and research.
The campus featured state-of-the-art laboratories, advanced research centers (like the former PI Research Center), modern lecture halls, extensive library resources, and comprehensive student facilities, including accommodation and recreational areas. It was designed to provide an immersive learning and research environment.
As an academic institution, The Petroleum Institute fostered a rigorous academic culture emphasizing research, innovation, and strong collaboration with the petroleum industry. It attracted a diverse international body of students and faculty. This ethos of academic excellence and industry relevance is maintained within Khalifa University.
The Petroleum Institute's campus was highly significant for its role in developing highly skilled engineers and researchers specifically for the UAE's vital petroleum industry. It made substantial contributions to the nation's economic development and technological capabilities in the energy sector.
While its physical campus was in Abu Dhabi, The Petroleum Institute cultivated a significant global presence through robust international academic partnerships with renowned universities worldwide (such as Colorado School of Mines, University of Maryland, University of Minnesota). It also had strong collaborations with major international oil and gas companies which were founding partners (e.g., BP, ExxonMobil, Shell, Total, JODCO). The Institute actively participated in international research consortia, conferences, and student exchange programs. This international engagement and collaborative spirit are now continued and expanded by Khalifa University.
