The Nuffield Foundation is an independent charitable trust with a mission to advance social well-being. It funds research, analysis, and student programmes that inspire and Ginform social policy and practice, primarily in the UK. The Foundation's work focuses on three core domains: Education, Justice, and Welfare. By generating evidence-based insights and fostering innovation, it aims to address societal challenges and improve people's lives, particularly those facing disadvantage. It was established by William Morris, Lord Nuffield, in 1943.
The headquarters serves as the central hub for all the Foundation's operations, including strategic planning, grant management, research commissioning, communications, and administration.
Located in a historic Georgian terraced house within Bedford Square, one of London's best-preserved Georgian squares, known for its garden and intellectual heritage.
The work culture is professional, collaborative, and mission-driven, with a strong emphasis on intellectual rigor, evidence-based approaches, and a commitment to social impact.
The headquarters in central London provides excellent access to policymakers, academic institutions, and other charitable organisations, facilitating collaboration and dissemination of research findings.
The Nuffield Foundation's primary focus is on social well-being within the United Kingdom. While it does not maintain international offices, its research findings and publications are often of international relevance and are shared with a global audience of researchers, policymakers, and practitioners. The Foundation may also engage in or fund research with international comparative elements when relevant to its UK-focused objectives.
