The Flea Theater is an Obie Award-winning Off-Off-Broadway theater company located in Tribeca, New York City. Co-founded in 1996 by director Jim Simpson, playwright Mac Wellman, and designer Kyle Chepulis (with Sigourney Weaver as a key founding member and early supporter), The Flea has been dedicated to presenting new and experimental work and providing a platform for emerging artists, notably through its former resident acting company, 'The Bats.' Known for its adventurous programming and intimate performance spaces, The Flea has played a significant role in the downtown theater scene. In May 2024, the theater announced the departure of its Artistic Director, Niegel Smith, and a pause in programming to undergo a period of reflection and strategic planning.
Serves as the central hub for all artistic, production, and administrative activities. This includes performances in its multiple theaters, rehearsals, workshops, and office operations for staff.
A modern, custom-built complex featuring three flexible performance spaces: The Sam (a proscenium theater), The Pete (a versatile black box), and The Siggy (an intimate black box). The facility also includes rehearsal studios and administrative offices.
Historically, The Flea has fostered an artist-centric and collaborative environment, emphasizing experimentation, ensemble work (particularly through 'The Bats' program), and the development of new voices in American theater. The culture encourages artistic risk-taking and innovation.
The Flea Theater is a key institution in New York City's Off-Off-Broadway scene, recognized for its commitment to new, challenging works and for nurturing emerging talent. The Thomas Street facility, opened in 2017, represented a major investment in its mission and future capacity.
The Flea Theater's primary sphere of influence is within the New York City and broader American theater landscape. While it does not maintain international offices, its reputation for groundbreaking productions and artist development programs contributes to global dialogues on contemporary theater. It has historically attracted artists, collaborators, and attention from the international arts community.
