The Curtis Institute of Music is a world-renowned conservatory in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, that educates and trains exceptionally gifted young musicians for careers as performing artists at the highest professional level. Founded in 1924 by Mary Louise Curtis Bok, Curtis is distinguished by its "learn-by-doing" philosophy and its unique all-scholarship policy, ensuring that students are admitted solely on artistic promise. With a small student body of around 175 and a faculty comprised of celebrated performing artists, Curtis offers intensive, personalized instruction in orchestral instruments, piano, voice, opera, composition, and conducting.
Serves as the primary and sole campus for all academic instruction, individual lessons, ensemble rehearsals, student recitals, opera productions, administrative operations, and community engagement.
Comprises several historic mansions, including the Main Building (Mary Louise Curtis Bok's former home), the newly renovated Knapp Performance Hall, Gould Rehearsal Hall, and the Rock Resource Center (library and archives). Features state-of-the-art practice rooms and performance spaces.
For students and faculty, the culture is intensely focused, rigorous, and dedicated to artistic excellence, yet highly supportive and collaborative due to its small size. For administrative staff, it's a mission-driven environment supporting world-class musical talent and fostering a close-knit community.
The historic campus is central to Curtis's intimate and immersive educational model. Its location in Philadelphia's cultural heart provides students with rich artistic context and performance opportunities. It is one of the most selective conservatories in the world.
While The Curtis Institute of Music has a single campus in Philadelphia, its global presence is significant. It attracts an international student body, with students often representing 20+ countries (typically 40-50% of students are international). Its distinguished alumni perform in leading orchestras, opera houses, and chamber ensembles worldwide. The 'Curtis on Tour' program brings student, faculty, and alumni performances to audiences across North America, Europe, and Asia, showcasing its talent internationally and extending its educational reach.
