The Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (TSBVI) is a special public school established by the Texas Legislature. It provides specialized and intensive educational services to students aged birth through 22 who are blind, visually impaired, or deafblind. TSBVI offers a comprehensive K-12 academic program, short-term specialized programs, and summer enrichment camps. Beyond direct student services on its Austin campus, TSBVI functions as a critical statewide resource, offering outreach services, professional development for educators, curriculum materials, and support for families and local school districts across Texas. Its mission is to empower students to achieve their full potential by fostering independence, academic excellence, and a positive self-concept in a supportive and accessible learning environment.
Serves as the primary educational campus for K-12 students, host for short-term and summer programs, administrative hub, and center for statewide outreach services and resource development.
A fully accessible campus designed to meet the unique needs of visually impaired students, featuring specialized classrooms, residential dormitories, assistive technology labs, an extensive library with braille and large print materials, accessible recreational facilities, a health center, and sensory gardens.
A collaborative, student-centered, and mission-driven environment. Staff are dedicated to providing specialized instruction and fostering independence. There's a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary teamwork among educators, therapists, residential staff, and administrators.
As the central and sole residential campus, it is pivotal for providing direct, intensive educational services and coordinating the statewide network of support and resources for visually impaired students throughout Texas.
TSBVI's primary operational focus is serving students within the state of Texas. However, its expertise, innovative programs, curriculum materials (like those developed for orientation and mobility, assistive technology, and braille literacy), and professional development initiatives are widely recognized and utilized by educators and institutions nationally. TSBVI actively contributes to the broader field of education for the visually impaired through research, publications, and presentations at national conferences. While it does not operate international campuses, its resources and best practices often inform international efforts in visual impairment education.
