STARS (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service Foundation) is a Canadian charitable, non-profit helicopter air ambulance organization dedicated to providing time-sensitive, critical care and transportation for ill and injured patients. Operating from bases across Western Canada (Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba), STARS offers a vital lifeline, especially in rural, remote, and Indigenous communities. Their highly skilled crews, consisting of pilots, flight paramedics, flight nurses, and transport physicians, bring advanced medical expertise directly to the patient or rapidly transport them to major trauma centers, significantly improving patient outcomes and saving lives. STARS is funded through community support, corporate partnerships, and government funding.
Serves as the central administrative and operational hub for STARS, coordinating fundraising, strategic planning, human resources, finance, IT, and logistical support for its network of air ambulance bases across Western Canada. It also houses key operational elements like the Emergency Link Centre.
The Calgary headquarters includes administrative offices, a state-of-the-art Emergency Link Centre (dispatch), advanced training and simulation facilities for medical and aviation personnel, and is co-located with the Calgary operational base and aircraft hangar.
A highly dedicated, mission-driven culture focused on excellence, safety, collaboration, and compassion in providing critical care. Teams work collaboratively in high-pressure situations, united by the common goal of saving lives and serving the community.
The headquarters is the nerve center for coordinating thousands of life-saving missions annually across a vast geographical area, managing critical resources, fostering innovation in pre-hospital critical care, and ensuring the sustainability of the organization.
STARS operates exclusively within Canada, with a primary focus on Western Canada (Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba). Its services are deeply integrated into the provincial healthcare systems of these provinces. While its direct flight operations are regional, STARS contributes to the broader Canadian and international emergency medical services community through leadership in air medical best practices, research, innovation, and training. They often collaborate with other air ambulance services and healthcare providers nationally.
