The Royal Academy of Arts (RA) is an independent, privately funded institution based in London, established in 1768. Led by eminent artists and architects, its mission is to promote the creation, enjoyment, and appreciation of the visual arts through world-class exhibitions, comprehensive education programs (including the prestigious RA Schools), and public debate. It holds a unique position in being an independent voice for art and artists.
Serves as the primary site for all Royal Academy activities, including its major public exhibitions, the RA Schools (its postgraduate art school), library, archives, collections display, administrative offices, and public engagement programs.
Burlington House is a historic Grade II* listed Palladian mansion. The site also includes the Annenberg Courtyard, Keeper's House, and the redeveloped 6 Burlington Gardens, featuring the Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler Galleries. The 2018 expansion by David Chipperfield Architects significantly enhanced facilities and public access.
Collaborative, creative, and intellectually stimulating, driven by a passion for art and its public appreciation. Staff work across curatorial, educational, operational, and fundraising departments, often engaging with artists, scholars, and the public in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.
As the historic home of one of the UK's foremost arts institutions, it's a major cultural landmark in London, hosting influential exhibitions, nurturing artistic talent through the RA Schools for over 250 years, and fostering critical debate on art and culture.
The Royal Academy of Arts maintains a significant global presence through its internationally acclaimed touring exhibitions, collaborations with museums and cultural institutions worldwide, and its diverse body of Royal Academicians, which includes international members. It actively engages in international cultural exchange, art scholarship, and extends its reach globally through digital programs and online resources.
