Playwrights Horizons is a non-profit off-Broadway theater located in New York City, dedicated to the support and development of contemporary American playwrights, lyricists, and composers, and to the production of their new work. Founded in 1971, it has served as an invaluable launchpad for countless influential theater artists and plays, many of which have gone on to Broadway, regional theaters, and international stages. The institution is committed to artistic diversity, risk-taking, and fostering a vibrant community for writers.
The headquarters serves as the primary venue for performances, rehearsals, workshops, administrative operations, and artist development programs.
The facility includes the Mainstage Theater (seating 198), the Peter Jay Sharp Theater (seating 128), rehearsal studios, administrative offices, and public gathering spaces. It's known for its intimate theater spaces that foster a close connection between audience and performance.
The work culture is deeply collaborative, mission-driven, and passionate about new play development. It's a creative and often fast-paced environment that values artistic integrity and support for playwrights.
Its location on 42nd Street, once a blighted area, now signifies its role in the revitalization of the block and its continued importance as a central hub for American playwriting.
Playwrights Horizons primarily operates from its New York City base. Its global presence is manifested through the subsequent productions of plays it has developed and premiered, which are often staged by theater companies across the United States and internationally. It also supports playwrights whose work has global reach and relevance.
