The Peace Corps is an independent U.S. government agency that sends American volunteers abroad to work on locally prioritized projects in education, health, environment, agriculture, youth in development, and community economic development. Established by President John F. Kennedy in 1961, its mission is to promote world peace and friendship by fulfilling three simple goals: helping the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women; helping promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served; and helping promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans. Volunteers live and work alongside community members, fostering sustainable change and cross-cultural understanding.
Serves as the central administrative and operational hub, overseeing global programs, volunteer recruitment and support, policy development, and agency management.
Modern office building designed to facilitate collaboration and support the agency's mission. Features open workspaces and meeting areas suitable for a federal agency.
Mission-driven, collaborative, and dedicated to public service. Staff are often former volunteers or have a strong commitment to international development and cross-cultural exchange.
Centralizes the leadership and support functions necessary for deploying and managing thousands of volunteers and programs in countries around the world.
Peace Corps supports volunteers and programs in numerous countries across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Central and South America, Eastern Europe, and the Pacific Islands. Functions supported globally include project design and implementation in sectors like education, health, agriculture, environment, youth development, and community economic development; volunteer training, safety, and health support; and cross-cultural exchange initiatives. The agency partners with host country governments and local communities to ensure projects are locally led and sustainable.
