Palmetto Health was a prominent healthcare system serving the Midlands region of South Carolina. Founded in 1998 through the merger of Richland Memorial Hospital and Baptist Healthcare System of Columbia, it provided comprehensive medical services, including hospitals, physician practices, and outpatient facilities. In 2017, Palmetto Health announced a merger with Greenville Health System (GHS) to form a new, larger entity. This new organization was officially launched as Prisma Health in early 2019. Prisma Health is now the largest non-profit health organization in South Carolina, committed to improving the health of all South Carolinians by enhancing clinical quality, patient experience, and access to care. While Palmetto Health no longer operates as an independent entity, its legacy, facilities, and many of its dedicated staff are integral to Prisma Health's mission in the Midlands region.
Served as the flagship hospital and administrative center for Palmetto Health, offering comprehensive medical services, specialized care, and medical education.
Major teaching hospital, Level I trauma center, children's hospital, cancer center, and heart hospital. Extensive campus with multiple specialized buildings.
As a large healthcare provider, the culture emphasized patient-centered care, collaboration among medical professionals, continuous learning, and community service. It was known for a strong commitment to medical education and research.
The Columbia campus was critical to healthcare in the Midlands, serving as a primary referral center and a major employer. Its legacy continues as a vital part of Prisma Health.
Prisma Health, which incorporates the former Palmetto Health, primarily focuses its operations and patient care services within the state of South Carolina. While it may participate in global health initiatives, research collaborations, or attract patients internationally for specialized treatments, its core mission and physical presence are concentrated on serving the diverse communities across South Carolina. It does not maintain operational offices or hospitals outside the USA.
