The Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) is an inter-governmental organization that aims to enhance cooperation between the independent and self-governing countries of the Pacific Ocean. Founded in 1971 as the South Pacific Forum, it was renamed in 1999 to better reflect its membership. Its mission is to work in support of Forum member governments, to enhance the economic and social well-being of the people of the Pacific by fostering cooperation between governments and between international agencies, and by representing the interests of Forum members in ways agreed by the Forum. Key areas of focus include regional security, economic development, climate change, ocean governance, and strengthening regionalism under the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.
Serves as the administrative, strategic, and operational hub of the Forum. It supports member countries through policy advice, program implementation, coordination of regional initiatives, and facilitating high-level diplomatic engagements.
The Secretariat building is a prominent complex in Suva, frequently hosting significant regional meetings, workshops, and diplomatic events. It is equipped with conference facilities designed for inter-governmental dialogue.
A professional, multicultural, and diplomatic environment focused on multilateral cooperation, policy development, and serving the collective interests of its diverse member states. Staff are drawn from across the Pacific region and beyond, contributing to a rich exchange of perspectives.
The headquarters is the nerve center for regional governance and diplomacy in the Pacific, acting as the primary coordination point for member states on critical issues such as climate change, economic resilience, and regional security. It symbolizes Pacific unity and collective action.
The Pacific Islands Forum supports its member states globally by engaging with international partners, participating in multilateral forums such as the United Nations, World Trade Organization, Commonwealth, and various climate change COPs. Its representative offices in key international hubs like Geneva and New York amplify the Pacific's collective voice on critical issues such as climate action, sustainable development, trade, fisheries, and maritime affairs. The Forum also coordinates regional responses to global challenges, facilitates development assistance from international donors and organizations, and builds strategic partnerships to advance the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.
