The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) / Te Ope Kātua o Aotearoa is the military organisation responsible for the defence and security interests of New Zealand. It comprises three services: the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN), the New Zealand Army (NZ Army), and the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF). The NZDF's mission is to secure New Zealand against external threats, protect its sovereign interests, including in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and undertake military and security responsibilities further afield. It also contributes to disaster relief, humanitarian aid, peacekeeping operations, and search and rescue missions, both domestically and internationally.
Serves as the strategic command and administrative center for the NZDF, overseeing policy development, operational planning, resource allocation, and inter-service coordination for the Navy, Army, and Air Force.
Modern, purpose-built government facility designed for secure and efficient operations. Features advanced communication and command capabilities and is situated in close proximity to Parliament and other key government agencies.
A professional, disciplined, and mission-oriented environment underpinned by military values such as courage (toa), commitment (ngākau whakaiti), comradeship (whanaungatanga), and integrity (pono). There is a strong emphasis on teamwork, strategic thinking, and joint operations.
Defence House is the nerve center for New Zealand's national defence strategy and operations. It symbolizes the unified command structure and the government's commitment to maintaining a capable defence force.
The New Zealand Defence Force maintains an active global presence through participation in United Nations peacekeeping missions, multinational coalition operations, international military exercises, and humanitarian aid and disaster relief (HADR) efforts. NZDF personnel are deployed in various regions, including the Pacific, Middle East, Africa, and Antarctica, contributing to international peace and security, providing specialized skills, and supporting New Zealand's foreign policy objectives. This includes maritime patrols, capacity building with partner nations, and contributions to global counter-terrorism efforts.
