The New York Guard (NYG) is New York State's volunteer, uniformed defense force, serving under the command of the Governor. Its primary mission is to provide trained and equipped personnel to support the New York National Guard and state/local civil authorities during emergencies, natural disasters, and other critical incidents. Members are unpaid volunteers who leverage their civilian and military-acquired skills in areas such as logistics, communications, medical support, engineering, legal services, and general aid. The NYG ensures a dedicated in-state response capability, especially when National Guard units are federally deployed.
Serves as the central command, administrative, and operational control center for all New York Guard units across the state. It coordinates training, personnel management, logistical support, and deployment of forces.
Located within Camp Smith, a premier New York State military training facility, offering access to extensive training areas, ranges, and support infrastructure. This co-location facilitates joint operations and resource sharing with other New York Military Forces components.
A disciplined, mission-oriented environment driven by volunteerism and a strong sense of duty to New York State. Emphasizes professionalism, teamwork, adherence to military customs and courtesies, and continuous readiness. Members contribute diverse professional skills.
Crucial for the effective command and control of the New York Guard, ensuring a coordinated and rapid response capability to support state objectives and assist communities in times of need.

Its functions are entirely focused on in-state support, including emergency response, disaster relief, logistical and communications support, medical assistance, community service, and augmenting the New York National Guard when activated for state duty.
