The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) is the New York State affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Founded in 1951, the NYCLU is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that works to protect and expand civil rights and civil liberties for all New Yorkers. Through litigation, legislative advocacy, public education, and community organizing, the NYCLU addresses a wide range of issues, including freedom of speech and religion, racial justice, LGBTQ+ rights, immigrants' rights, reproductive rights, criminal justice reform, privacy, and voting rights. Their mission is to ensure that the principles of equality, fairness, and due process are upheld throughout New York State.
Serves as the central administrative, legal, advocacy, and programmatic hub for the NYCLU's statewide operations. It houses leadership, legal teams, policy experts, communications, and development staff.
Modern office facilities within a prominent New York City office building, designed to support collaborative work and engagement with the community.
Passionate, mission-driven, and collaborative, with a strong commitment to social justice, equality, and the defense of constitutional rights. Staff are dedicated to advocacy and public interest work.
The headquarters is the strategic center for NYCLU's efforts to impact law and policy, conduct high-impact litigation, and mobilize public support for civil liberties across New York State.
While the NYCLU's primary mandate is to protect civil liberties within New York State, its work often has national implications, setting legal precedents and influencing policy debates that resonate beyond state borders. As an affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the NYCLU contributes to a nationwide network defending rights across the U.S. The ACLU, in turn, engages with international human rights principles and bodies, particularly where U.S. laws and policies have extraterritorial effects or intersect with international norms.
