The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center is a museum of conscience, an education center, a convener of dialogue, and a beacon of light for inclusive freedom around the globe. Located in downtown Cincinnati on the banks of the Ohio River, it shares powerful stories of freedom's heroes, from the era of the Underground Railroad to contemporary struggles for freedom, challenging and inspiring visitors to take courageous steps for freedom today. Its exhibitions and programs focus on America's struggle for freedom, the history of slavery and the Underground Railroad, and contemporary issues of social justice and human rights.
Serves as the primary museum facility, housing permanent and traveling exhibits, educational programming, research archives, event spaces, and the administrative offices for the organization.
The building, designed by Boora Architects (with Blackburn Architects), features three pavilions symbolizing courage, cooperation, and perseverance. A key artifact is 'The Slave Pen,' an actual 19th-century slave jail from a Kentucky farm. Its location offers panoramic views of the Ohio River, a historic barrier and gateway to freedom.
A mission-driven environment characterized by a deep commitment to education, historical accuracy, and social justice. Staff often engage in collaborative efforts to create impactful visitor experiences and community programs.
The headquarters' location on the Ohio River is profoundly symbolic, as the river was a major crossing point for enslaved people seeking freedom. The Center itself is a national monument to courage, freedom, and human dignity.
While its physical museum is located in Cincinnati, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center fosters a global presence through its online educational resources, digital exhibits, and by addressing universal themes of freedom, human rights, and the fight against modern slavery. It collaborates with international institutions and its stories resonate with audiences worldwide, highlighting the global nature of the pursuit of freedom.
