The National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) is a U.S. Congressionally chartered, not-for-profit institution dedicated to discovering, saving, and studying the world's tropical plants and sharing what is learned. NTBG operates a network of five botanical gardens and three preserves in Hawaiʻi and Florida, each with a unique focus and collection. Its work includes plant exploration, propagation, conservation, research, and education, playing a crucial role in preventing plant extinctions and preserving biodiversity. NTBG manages some of the most significant collections of rare and endangered tropical plants globally.
Serves as the central administrative hub, coordinating research, conservation, education, fundraising, and operational activities across all NTBG sites.
Located in a region of rich biodiversity, the headquarters facilitates access to NTBG's flagship gardens on Kauaʻi, McBryde Garden and Allerton Garden. The proximity to these living laboratories is a key feature.
A mission-driven environment focused on botanical science, conservation, and education, fostering collaboration among scientists, horticulturists, educators, and administrative staff. The culture emphasizes a deep respect for nature and Hawaiian culture.
Crucial for the strategic direction and unified management of NTBG's extensive network of gardens and preserves, ensuring the effective execution of its conservation mission.
While its physical gardens are in the USA (Hawaiʻi and Florida), NTBG's impact is global. It engages in international plant exploration expeditions, collaborates with botanical institutions worldwide on research and conservation projects, participates in global seed banking initiatives like the Millennium Seed Bank, and plays a key role in the conservation of globally significant plant species, such as breadfruit, through its collections and research. Its scientists publish internationally and contribute to global biodiversity strategies.
