The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) is a private, independent, nonprofit institution that advances the well-being of the nation by promoting a vibrant engineering profession and by marshalling the expertise and insights of eminent engineers to provide independent advice to the federal government on matters involving engineering and technology. Part of The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the NAE operates under the same congressional act of incorporation signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 that established the National Academy of Sciences. Members are elected to the NAE by their peers for their outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature and to the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education.
The headquarters serves as the primary administrative and operational center for the NAE, facilitating its programs, studies, meetings, and outreach efforts to fulfill its mission of advising the nation on engineering and technology.
The NAE is co-located with the National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Medicine in two main buildings: the historic National Academy of Sciences Building on Constitution Avenue and the Keck Center of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. The NAS Building is renowned for its classical architecture and the Great Hall.
The work culture is highly intellectual, mission-driven, and collaborative, focused on providing objective, evidence-based advice. It involves interaction with leading engineers and scientists from academia, industry, and government.
The D.C. headquarters is strategically located to facilitate interaction with federal government agencies, policymakers, and other national organizations, central to its advisory role.
While primarily focused on serving the United States, the NAE maintains a significant international presence through collaborations with engineering academies worldwide, participation in international engineering organizations (like the International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences - CAETS), and by addressing global challenges that require engineering solutions. Its membership also includes international members, fostering global exchange of knowledge and expertise.
