Mount Ida College was a private college located in Newton, Massachusetts, founded in 1899. It offered a range of undergraduate and graduate programs, emphasizing career-focused education and personalized learning in a small college environment. Facing significant financial challenges, Mount Ida College announced its closure in April 2018, ceasing operations at the end of the Spring 2018 semester. The campus was subsequently acquired by the University of Massachusetts Amherst and now operates as the Mount Ida Campus of UMass Amherst, dedicated to providing UMass students with experiential learning opportunities, internships, and career development programs in proximity to Boston.
Served as the sole comprehensive campus for all academic programs, administrative operations, student housing, and extracurricular activities of the former Mount Ida College.
The picturesque campus included a blend of historic and modern buildings, such as Holbrook Hall, Alumnae Hall, the Shaw Hall Library, various academic centers, residence halls, an athletics complex, and extensive green spaces. The Wadsworth Museum Gallery was also a notable feature.
(Historical) Mount Ida College cultivated a close-knit, student-centric community. The work culture for faculty and staff was characterized by a dedication to teaching, student mentorship, and preparing students for their careers in a supportive environment.
The campus is historically significant as the home of Mount Ida College for over a century, contributing to the education of thousands. It is now an integral part of UMass Amherst's strategy to expand its reach and program offerings in the Greater Boston area.
As a regional private college, Mount Ida College's primary operational focus was within the United States, particularly serving students from New England and other domestic regions. It did not maintain international campuses or offices. Its global connections were primarily through its diverse student body, which included international students, and its alumni network.
