Mid-Continent University (MCU) was a private, Baptist-affiliated university located in Mayfield, Kentucky. Founded in 1949 as Mid-Continent Baptist Bible College, it was later renamed Mid-Continent College in 1993 and subsequently Mid-Continent University in 2004. The institution offered a range of associate, bachelor's, and master's degree programs, emphasizing a Christian worldview. MCU faced significant financial difficulties and challenges related to federal student aid programs, which ultimately led to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) revoking its accreditation. Consequently, Mid-Continent University ceased all academic operations and permanently closed on June 30, 2014. This page provides historical information about the former university, its operations, and its eventual closure.
Served as the sole physical campus for all academic programs, student residential life, library services, athletic facilities, and administrative operations of the former university.
The campus included academic buildings, administrative offices, a library, chapel, student housing facilities, and the Mathena Center for Sports and Ministry. It was situated in a rural setting.
As a Baptist-affiliated institution, the work culture prior to its closure likely emphasized Christian values, community, ministry, and a dedication to providing faith-integrated higher education. Staff and faculty were committed to student spiritual and academic development.
The campus was the heart of Mid-Continent University for over six decades, representing its mission to provide Christian higher education to students primarily from Kentucky and surrounding regions. Its closure marked the end of a long-standing educational institution in Western Kentucky.
Mid-Continent University's operations were focused domestically within the United States, primarily serving students from Kentucky and the surrounding Mid-South region. It did not have international campuses or a significant global physical presence. Its online programs allowed for a broader reach, but its institutional identity was rooted in its Mayfield, Kentucky campus.
