Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) is a public university in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, specializing in maritime-related fields. Established in 1891, it is the oldest continuously operating maritime academy in the United States. MMA offers a range of undergraduate and graduate programs including Marine Engineering, Marine Transportation, International Maritime Business, Emergency Management, Facilities Engineering, and Energy Systems Engineering. The Academy is distinguished by its structured cadet lifestyle within a regimented environment, extensive hands-on training aboard its training ship (currently the T.S. Kennedy), and strong career placement rates in the global maritime industry and related shore-side professions.
The main campus serves as the primary center for academics, regimental training, administration, student life, and houses key operational facilities for the university.
Waterfront campus with extensive pier facilities, the Training Ship Kennedy (when in port), state-of-the-art simulation centers (including Full Mission Ship Simulator and Engine Room Simulator), the ABS Information Commons, and the Flume Tank.
For cadets, the culture is defined by a regimented system emphasizing discipline, leadership, teamwork, and hands-on learning. For faculty and staff, it's a mission-driven academic environment focused on preparing students for specialized careers, often with a strong connection to maritime traditions and industry standards.
As the nation's oldest continuously operating maritime academy and the only one in Massachusetts, it plays a crucial role in educating and training professionals for the U.S. Merchant Marine and numerous other global maritime and land-based industries. It's a cornerstone of maritime education in New England.
Massachusetts Maritime Academy's global presence is primarily established through its annual Sea Term, where cadets on the T.S. Kennedy visit various international and domestic ports, providing real-world operational experience in diverse maritime environments. The Academy boasts a global network of alumni working worldwide in maritime and related industries. It also engages in international collaborations, welcomes international students, and prepares graduates for careers that are inherently global in nature, such as international shipping and logistics.
