Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt) is a public, independent college of art and design located in Boston, Massachusetts. Founded in 1873, it is one of the oldest art schools in the United States, the first art college in the U.S. to grant a degree, and the only publicly funded free-standing art school in the country. MassArt is renowned for its rigorous programs in fine arts, design, art education, and media arts, fostering a vibrant community of artists, designers, and scholars dedicated to creative exploration and critical inquiry.
The main campus serves as the central hub for all academic programs, administrative offices, studios, galleries, libraries, and student life facilities.
The campus includes the Design and Media Center, the Pozen Center for Interrelated Media, the Bakalar & Paine Galleries, extensive studio spaces for various disciplines, and multiple residence halls including the 'Tree House' and 'Artists' Residence'. It's a prominent fixture on Boston's Avenue of the Arts.
As an educational institution, the 'work culture' for faculty and staff is academic, collaborative, and focused on fostering student creativity and critical thinking. The environment is dynamic, with a strong emphasis on artistic practice, innovation, and community engagement.
The headquarters/main campus is the heart of MassArt, where its educational mission is realized. Its location on the Avenue of the Arts places it within a rich cultural ecosystem, alongside institutions like the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.
While MassArt's physical campus is primarily in Boston, its global presence is manifested through its diverse international student body, faculty with international experience and collaborations, study abroad programs that offer students opportunities in various countries, and an alumni network that extends worldwide. The college also participates in international art and design dialogues through exhibitions and visiting artists/scholars.
