The Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (MI) was a private, not-for-profit, graduate-level research university located in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Established in 2007 in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), it was dedicated to advanced research and education in renewable energy, sustainability, and advanced technologies. In 2017, Masdar Institute, along with the Petroleum Institute and Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research (KUSTAR), merged to form the new, unified Khalifa University of Science and Technology. The former Masdar Institute campus now serves as one of Khalifa University's primary campuses, continuing its focus on sustainable innovation and research.
Served as the central hub for graduate education, cutting-edge research in sustainable technologies, renewable energy, and water resources, and fostered innovation through industry partnerships.
Designed by Foster + Partners, the campus was a globally recognized model of sustainable architecture. It featured passive and active cooling systems, integrated renewable energy generation (e.g., rooftop photovoltaics), a low-carbon footprint design, narrow shaded streets, and laboratories built to high environmental standards. The iconic windtower was a central feature for natural ventilation research.
As a research-intensive graduate institution, the culture was highly collaborative, innovative, and international, attracting students and faculty from around the world focused on solving global sustainability challenges. It emphasized interdisciplinary research and close ties with industry.
The Masdar Institute campus was (and remains as part of Khalifa University) a living laboratory for sustainable urban development and a testament to Abu Dhabi's commitment to diversifying its economy and investing in future energy solutions. It was a cornerstone of Masdar City's vision.
Prior to its merger, Masdar Institute established a significant global presence through research collaborations with leading international universities (notably MIT), participation in global sustainability forums, and by attracting a diverse international cohort of students and faculty. Its research output had a global reach, contributing to advancements in renewable energy, water, and sustainable technologies worldwide. It did not operate independent international campuses but fostered a global network of partners.
