Marygrove College was a private Catholic liberal arts college located in Detroit, Michigan, founded by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) in 1905 in Monroe, Michigan, and relocated to Detroit in 1927. For over 90 years in Detroit, it was dedicated to providing a strong liberal arts education with a focus on social justice, community service, and leadership development, serving a diverse student body, including many first-generation college students. The college offered undergraduate and graduate programs in areas like education, social work, visual and performing arts, and business. Due to declining enrollment and financial challenges, Marygrove College ceased its undergraduate programs in 2017 and fully closed all operations in December 2019. Its historic campus is now being redeveloped by the Marygrove Conservancy.
Historically, this was the sole campus of Marygrove College, housing all academic programs, administrative offices, library, residential halls, and student life facilities. It served as the heart of the college community.
The campus is known for its English Gothic architectural style, particularly the Liberal Arts Building (1929), Madame Cadillac Hall (1927), and the Scholastica Library. The campus also featured a performing arts center and expansive green spaces.
Historically, Marygrove fostered a close-knit, mission-driven environment characterized by a strong commitment to liberal arts education, social justice, personalized student attention, and community engagement, influenced by its IHM Sisters sponsorship.
For nearly a century, Marygrove College's campus was a vital educational and cultural landmark in Detroit, particularly significant for providing higher education opportunities to women, minority students, and first-generation college attendees. It was a beacon of learning and community service.
Marygrove College was primarily a regional institution focused on serving the Detroit metropolitan area and did not have a significant global operational presence. Its impact was mainly local and regional through its graduates and community engagement. The college ceased operations in 2019.
